Tidsskriftet

I was contacted by Hilde, the wonderful art director at Tidsskriftet—the peer-reviewed scientific journal of the Norwegian Medical Association—to create a cover illustration on breast cancer, specifically focusing on oncoplastic breast-conserving surgeries.
What made this project particularly memorable was the brief itself. Hilde explicitly asked me to steer away from the usual images of young, white, “perfect” breasts that dominate so much of the medical imagery out there. Instead, they wanted a patient who was at least 50 years old—and of color—for a publication in Norway. Everything about that direction felt thoughtful, important, and just plain awesome.
It’s a great reminder that medical illustration isn’t just about anatomy—it’s also about representation. Creating images that reflect real patients, their diversity, and their experiences makes the science more relatable and the visuals more meaningful. This project was a perfect example of how collaboration with a thoughtful editorial team can lead to images that are both accurate and socially conscious.
