Mecial Acupuncture for Divers

April 19, 2018

Every so often, a project comes along that’s a bit outside your usual lane—and those can be some of the most interesting to work on. This was definitely one of those. Over several months, I created illustrations for a book exploring the clinical use of acupuncture to treat conditions related to diving.

The author, Janneke Vermeulen, has a practice in The Hague in the Netherlands and is currently the only acupuncturist in the world who specializes exclusively in treating divers. The book looks at a range of issues caused or complicated by diving, as well as medical conditions—like sinus and ear problems—that can make diving and other water sports difficult or even impossible.

From an illustration standpoint, the project required learning a new set of concepts and finding clear ways to visualize anatomy, pressure-related effects, and acupuncture treatment points. It was a great reminder of how often medical illustration involves stepping into unfamiliar territory and learning alongside your clients.

And after spending that much time thinking about sinus pressure and barotrauma, I can say this: the next time my sinuses start acting up, I’ll probably give acupuncture a try.
